The AdirondacksAdirondacks Hiking & Biking: From the picturesque foothills to the majestic Adirondacks High Peaks, there are over 2,000 miles of hiking & biking trails (Adirondack Biking): in the Adironadack Mountains and many of the most scenic are in our area.
Ausable Chasm: Ausable Chasm offers two routes up to the 150-foot vertical ridge at the top of the rim and the chance to float down by raft or inner-tube and enjoy the breathtaking natural beauty.
Coon Mountain: From dark forests of hemlock and oak-pine trees to steep cliffs and craggy outcroppings, hiking on nearby Coon Mountain is truly made for nature-lovers. Wildlife viewing of species ranging from frogs & salamanders, to porcupines and broad-winged hawks abounds.
Split Rock Mountain: Hiking at Split Rock Mountain not only takes you "back to nature," but also back in time. The large rocky outcropping rises up over a narrow passage next to the Lake Champlain shore and served as a natural boundary line' first for Native American tribes, then for the New France and New England colonies in the early 1700s.
Adirondacks Fishing: Go deep for Lake Trout and Landlocked Salmon. Fly fish for Brook, Rainbow and Brown Trout. Land a Bass or any of several varieties of Pan Fish. Cast a line along the popular Ausable River, find your own favorite fishing hole, or be guided to the finest Adirondacks fishing spots by local charters.
Adirondacks Canoeing & Kayaking: From easy paddling on the calm waters of Taylor Pond to the more challenging flow at Chubb River, your time on the water is sure to delight with breathtaking views of the natural beauty of the Adirondacks flora and fauna.
Adirondack Museum: Not all museums are indoor experiences. The Adirondack Museum celebrates the great outdoors at its open air museum on Blue Mountain Lake. Exhibits and events celebrating Adirondacks history, culture and nature combine to provide a unique experience with each visit.
1812 Homestead and Farm Museum: The 1812 Homestead and Farm Museum in Willsboro, New York began as an inn and today offers a living history tour that provides visitors with a "hands-on" experience of rural life in the early 19th century.
Lake Placid and Whiteface Mountain: The Lake Placid and Whiteface Mountain Region offers many alternatives for shopping, dining, hiking, summer ski jumping events and much more. And, it's less than an hour away from Barber Homestead Park!
Lake Champlain, which lies along the border between New York State and Vermont, offers some of the finest recreation in the northeastern United States, including: Lake Champlain Fishing. Reel in a memorable fishing trip, and a tasty catch, at Lake Champlain. Lake Champlain fishing offers a diverse group of species that include Pike, Bass, Trout, Lake Sturgeon and Channel Catfish.
Lake Champlain Ferry:The Lake Champlain Southern Crossing from Essex, New York to Charlotte, Vermont is close to Barber Homestead Park. Enjoy a scenic 20 minute cruise across the lake. Fort Ticonderoga: The Fort Ticonderoga National Historic Landmark lies along a narrows near the south end of Lake Champlain. Since 1909, Fort Ticonderoga has invited visitors to step back in time to its 18th century origins, when it served the New France colonials in the French and Indian War and the British forces in the Revolutionary War. Fort Crown Point: The French built the first fortification in the Champlain Valley, named Fort St. Frederic, here in 1734. When the British took the fort in 1759, they immediately began expanding and improving upon the fortifications, which stood through the Revolutionary War (and was briefly taken by the Revolutionary Army). Today the well-preserved ruins of this fort are a major draw for history buffs.You don't have to travel very far to have fun. Our hometown offers a lot to see, do and experience!
